About Barney Stone
Barney has had a varied career, from owning a hippie coffeehouse and performing psychedelic light shows in the 1960’s to running a video production business, working for a rocket company and founding two computer software companies. He started working with glass as a hobby about a dozen years ago, first making fused bowls and tiles, then expanding into three dimensional works assembled from used shelf glass.
As he gained experience and slowly built his home workshop, Barney became interested in cold working and kiln casting. He studied with leading glass artists at facilities around the country.
In 2011, Barney sold his software company so he could devote more time to his passion for glass. In 2012 he opened a studio and gallery in Lambertville, NJ. His recent works tend to have an architectural influence or to incorporate antique mechanical devices. He is particularly interested in the optical properties of glass and the special effects and illusions they can produce.
2013 was a turning point for Barney. A workshop at Penland School of Craft introduced him to kinetic sculpture. Since then he has been combining found objects and Arduino microcontrollers to produce humorous kinetic sculptures that interact with viewers and their environment.
